September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. As a prostate cancer survivor, I’m urging all men to know the facts about this disease because visiting your doctor for an annual health screening and a simple PSA blood test can save your life.

Did You Know…
• The National Cancer Institute predicts 218,000 American men will hear the words “you have prostate cancer” during 2010 – that’s more than 4,000 per week.
• There are 25,000 more cases of prostate cancer diagnosed annually in the U.S. than new breast cancer cases, yet prostate cancer is rarely talked about.
• More than 32,000 American men will die from prostate cancer this year. These are our fathers, sons, brothers, husbands, friends, colleagues and neighbors.
• One in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime.
• Dennis Hopper, Jerry Orbach, Timothy Leary, Bill Bixby, Frank Zappa, Merv Griffin, Telly Savalas, Dan Fogelberg and Johnny Ramone all died from prostate cancer.
• Harry Belafonte, Sen. Robert Dole, Arnold Palmer, Rudy Giuliani, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Roger Moore, Nelson Mandela, Colin Powell, Joe Torre, John Kerry, Norman Schwarzkopf and Robert DeNiro are all prostate cancer survivors.
• African American males and men with a family history of prostate cancer are more likely to contract the disease.
• The Blue Ribbon is the symbol of prostate cancer awareness and the desire to find a cure for this deadly disease.
• America’s prostate cancer organizations recommend that men in high risk groups start annual prostate health screenings and PSA testing at 35 years old and suggest all men start getting tested at age 40.
• Annual prostate health screenings and the use of the PSA (prostate specific antigen) Test, along with improved treatments, have reduced the death rate from prostate cancer by approximately 40 percent in the past 15 years.

Since 2008, Pints for Prostates has been reaching men through the universal language of beer. We have events planned around the country during September and more are being added. Check out www.pintsforprostates.org for a complete calendar listing.

If you cannot get out to one of the events, there are two other ways to get involved with Pints for Prostates. In conjunction with LD Carlson, we have launched the Brewer’s Best PSA IPA</a> homebrew ingredient kit. In cooperation with the Rare Beer of the Month Club and Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales, a very limited release beer has been created to raise awareness, Jolly Pumpkin Biere De Goord. Both of these efforts raise funds to fight prostate cancer. More importantly, these projects are aimed at getting men think about their health and schedule a check up.

Tell all the guys you know over 40 years old that it is just this simple: 1. Get tested. 2. Live longer. 3. Drink more beer.

September 30, 2010

5:00 pm

to

11:00 pm

Newport, Ore. — Rogue Ales has made a $5,000 donation to support the mission of the Pints for Prostates campaign, which reaches men through the universal language of beer with a critical message about prostate health screening and PSA testing, and will host an awareness day on Sept. 30 at each of its pub locations in Oregon, Washington and California.

“Having the continued generous support of Rogue Ales for Pints for Prostates is just fantastic. Our goal is to communicate with men in a friendly and non-threatening way and a partner like Rogue Ales helps us reach more men,” says Rick Lyke, a 49-year-old Charlotte, N.C., marketing executive and drinks journalist who had successful prostate cancer surgery in April 2008. “This year 218,000 men will hear the words ‘you have prostate cancer.’ That’s 25,000 more news cases of prostate cancer than the number of new breast cancer cancers. Sadly, 32,000 men will die from the disease and nearly all would have survived if they had been diagnosed earlier.”

This is the third straight year Rogue Ales has backed the Pints for Prostates campaign. In addition to the financial donation, Rogue Ales donates beer to Pints for Prostates events around the country and has hosted fundraisers for the organization.

“We’re pleased to be able to help Pints for Prostates in its mission to reach more men with lifesaving information. Beer is a social beverage and we think this campaign can lead to men being more open to talking about their health,” said Brett Joyce, president of Rogue Ales. “The message to our customers is a simple one: drink Dead Guy Ale, but don’t be a Dead Guy. Get a PSA test.”

Rogue Ales will host events at the following nine locations on Sept. 30 starting at 5 p.m.:

– Rogue Ales Public House, 748 SW Bay Blvd., Newport, Ore., (541) 265-3188
– Brewer’s on the Bay, 2320 OSU Drive, Newport, Ore.
– Rogue Distillery & Public House (PDX), 1339 NW Flanders, Portland, Ore., (503) 222-5910
– The Green Dragon, 928 SE 9th Ave., Portland, Ore., (503) 517-0660

Two weeks ago I made my first batch of homebrew. Brewing along side my son-in-law Mike Wirth and my future son-in-law Jake Koneman, we made a batch of Brewer’s Best PSA IPA. Today it was time to crack open the first bottle.

LD Carlson Co. created PSA IPA to help to raise awareness about prostate cancer. The company is donating $3 from every kit sold to the Pints for Prostates campaign. Some of the homebrew stores selling the ingredient kits have pledged to match the donation. Links to some the online retailers selling the kits are listed below.

My version of Brewer’s Best PSA IPA poured a dark amber color with a slight haze. A healthy off-white head stuck around throughout the beer. There was a mellow floral aroma to the beer. There was a good amount of malt to this beer, which balanced off the hops. Overall PSA IPA is very drinkable and smooth.
